Can the DSID Brightsign device connect via WiFi?

The short answer is yes. While DSID BrightSign devices can be configured for WiFi connectivity, there are specific hardware requirements, fees, and operational considerations you should be aware of before choosing this option.

At DSID, our primary goal is to ensure your digital signage remains online and functional 24/7. Because of this, we strongly recommend a wired Ethernet connection whenever possible.

Why DSID Recommends a Wired (Ethernet) Connection

Stability is the backbone of effective digital signage. A wired connection provides:

  • Maximum Reliability: Hardwired connections are not subject to signal interference or "dead zones."
  • Consistent Bandwidth: Ensures large video files and high-definition content sync quickly without interruption.
  • Simple Maintenance: Plug-and-play functionality that doesn't require credential management.

Using WiFi: What You Need to Know
If a wired drop is not available at your screen location, WiFi is an available alternative. Please review the following requirements:

  1. Hardware Upgrade Fee
WiFi capability is not standard on all BrightSign models. It requires the installation of a dedicated internal WiFi antenna/module. This is treated as a hardware upgrade and carries an additional one-time fee.
  2. Environment Requirements
For the WiFi adapter to perform reliably, the following conditions must be met:
    • Signal Strength: The device must be located in an area with a strong, consistent WiFi signal.
    • Network Congestion:
The network should not be over-saturated with other devices (phones, laptops, guest traffic), as this can cause the BrightSign to lose its heartbeat or fail to download content updates.
  3. Pre-Shipment Configuration:
Unlike a standard laptop, DSID BrightSign devices are pre-configured for security and ease of use. If you opt for WiFi:
    • You must provide your WiFi credentials (SSID/Network Name and Password) to DSID prior to the shipment of your device.
    • Our team will hard-code these credentials into the device’s data card so it arrives ready to connect.

    Important: Managing Network Changes
The process of updating WiFi credentials on a BrightSign device is complex. If you plan to change your WiFi network name or password, you must notify DSID ahead of time.

What happens if the credentials change without notice?

If your network credentials change and the device is not updated beforehand, the player will go offline immediately. Because the device can no longer "talk" to the cloud to receive the new password, the fix usually requires:

    1. DSID manually re-configuring a new physical data card.
    2. Shipping the new card to your location.
    3. Result: Your screens may experience extended downtime, and you may incur shipping and administrative costs for the replacement card.
